The Castle is launching its new N4 Mini Club to teach young children climbing skills in a fun and safe environment.  The club, for 5 to 8 year olds, will be run on Saturday mornings by an experienced, qualified instructor with small group ratios of no more than six children per instructor.  The sessions will use games to help children develop their coordination and balance and introduce them to climbing.  We know that rock climbing has many benefits for children including the development teamworking skills, increased self-confidence and trust, better motivation and improved levels of fitnes

There are only a couple of days to go until Christmas (as if you needed reminding!) and the Herb Team at the Castle Garden has been working hard producing some lovely herbal gifts and stocking fillers, made from herbs grown in the Castle Garden this year!

Junior Coach and finalist Grace Spence-Green gives her perspective of the Comp Squad's BMC Open Youth Event results.

On the weekend of the 7th-8th of December, the Castle Squad travelled to Sheffield to compete in the awesome BMC Youth Open Event for both bouldering and leading. It was also the qualifier for the Junior British climbing team. Based on their performances, Cameron made the GB Climbing Team, Eugenie the GB Bouldering Team and Jim made both teams, which was absolutely fantastic news for the Squad.

The hard training this autumn term has paid off with not one, not two, but THREE squad members selected to compete on the British Team next year. Selection took place on the 7th and 8th of December at the Open Youth Events in Sheffield. As this was selection for next year's team, some competitors were moved up an age category.Eugenie Lee and Jim Pope were selected for the Junior British Bouldering Team and Cameron McLoughlin and Jim were selected for the Junior British Climbing Team.

Dear climbers,

I hope that you’ve been enjoying the new facilities that we’ve developed this year: the New Lead Area, Comp Wall, Outside Boulders and, of course, the long-awaited Loft Wall and Loft Boulder.  I know that I’ve been enjoying it! We’ve also built a Roundhouse in the Garden and developed our new website.  I’ve had so many people come and tell me how great they think the new areas are and how proud to be part of the Castle because of its atmosphere and its values. That encouragement means a lot to me- thank you.

Tim Emmett, one of the most psyched climbers of all time, was recently at The Castle Climbing Centre on behalf of Mountain Hardwear delivering drytooling masterclasses in The Quarry and later giving his talk 'The Perfect Storm'. Tim has waived his fees so that we can donate profits to the Breathtakers OB Trust charity.

What a busy summer!

The garden was a hive of activity with herb and vegetable production increasing, volunteers harvesting, youth groups experimenting with earth building, lectures, courses and parties!

In June the flowers were out in force and the bees were working overtime! Our garden was alive with colours; huge purple poppy heads, gentle mustard flowers, towering hollyhock and everything in between.
