Vacancy: Trainee Route setter

An exciting opportunity has opened to become the Castle’s Trainee Route Setter!

We are looking for a keen learner with no route setting experience or someone with existing setting skills wishing to develop further to join our team as a part-time trainee route setter. You will work around 10-20h a week and will hold several duties and responsibilities within the route setting department while learning how to route set to a high standard.

The learning programme will take three years and will require your commitment for the whole period.

The pay for the three-year period is: 
Year 1 - £13.00/h 
Year 2 - £15.00/h 
Year 3 – 17.00/h 
NOTE: If you have previous RS experience, you may be placed straight into year 2 or 3.

By the end of the traineeship you will be able to work as a freelance or contracted professional at the Castle and other climbing centres. 

You must have an aptitude for learning new skills quickly, respond well to feedback and be a team player. Ideal candidate will have a good climbing technique and ability (as a guide V3/4 for female applicants, V5/6 for male applicants), an eye for detail and analytical thinking when it comes to climbing movement. An interest in all route setting department functions and operations is essential although no prior knowledge of these is required. 

Your duties will include:

  • Setting routes and boulders once required level of skills has been achieved
  • Involvement in daily route setting activities (e.g. holds stripping and washing)
  • Organising and maintaining setting stores, route setting equipment and holds
  • Assisting the Setting manager with various day-to-day operations and ongoing tasks
