Christmas is already feeling very different this year. With 2020 disrupting our plans or making it difficult to see the ones you love,
Finding the perfect gift from a sustainable source can be difficult, so we've put together a list of gifts that you know will be used and appreciated and by a climber you care about. We've specially selected some that are postage friendly, for those you can't see in person - plus, you can order from the Castle Shop online and get it sent direct to them if you like, or Click+Collect from the Castle to wrap yourself (we recommend this option if you can't resist picking up a brownie and a brew on your way!) Perfect.
Gifts Under £10
Useful: Climbing Accessories
There’s a heap of small, handy presents you can pick up for a climber which don’t cost the earth, and because they’re guaranteed to get used, they’re not creating waste for our planet either.
A basic belay device like
Wooden hold brushes, rolls of climbing tape and refillable chalk bags are all handy things a climber will definitely use, rather than endless novelty gifts you probably don’t want.
Ethical gifts that support independent makers and don’t harm our planet.
Buy Handmade: Crash Matt Chalk Bags and Bee Kind Balm
Eco-friendly, bespoke chalk bags made by a local climber – you can’t get better than that, can you? Well you can, because Crash Matt also hand makes Bee Kind & Climb Bars, beeswax balms perfect for soothing post-climb hands. Or you can just get a Bee Kind & Climb Bar as the perfect stocking filler on its own.
Buy From Independent Artists: Fantastic Female Adventurers
Illustrator Chellie is a Castle climber, and her gorgeous artwork fills the new book Fantastic Female Adventurers. Inspire the young climbers and explorers-to-be in your life with this beautifully illustrated book, sure to galvanise anyone to adventure, male or female. You can get a sneak peak of Chellie’s incredible talent with our Stairway Gallery where we’ll be exhibiting prints of her work throughout December. You can even take home one of her pieces for your very own, if the book alone isn’t enough.
We’re truly proud of our efforts this year to look into the sourcing of the clothes we stock in our Shop. We’ve been buying BlueSign products – an independently verified certification which fact checks how a garment is made, from where the raw materials come from to which dyes are used to how the workers are treated. It traces its ethical impact, and only items made with care get the accreditation. It also means the garments are made with thought, care and precision – meaning it’s a higher quality product which will wear well and last longer, meaning better value for you.
Feeling Generous: Gifts over £30
Got a bit more cash to splash? Want to make someone feel really special? Here are some big presents for anyone on Santa’s Nice List.
Buy an Experience, Not a Thing: Climbing Courses
With 8 adult courses to choose from, not to mention our Kids and Family Tasters too, a climbing course is a fantastic present. Whether you’re looking to tempt in a friend to experience climbing for the first time on a 1 hour taster session (and trust us, the bragging rights of “I climbed in an actual Castle!” are enough to please them alone!), or helping someone take the next step to learn new skills, a course is a brilliant gift that will let them gain skills and confidence as well as having fun, without anything cluttering up the back of a cupboard.
It’s a bit of an investment to get a proper, safe climbing rope (beware, there are dangerous fakes out there), so purchasing a rope for a climber is a present gratefully received! Castle lead lines require a 30m rope, or for outside you might want some guidance for which type of rope will suit you best – luckily, our dedicated shop team are the best gear geeks you could ever hope to meet, and they’ll be able to offer sound advice.
If in doubt…
If you’re stuck for a last-minute idea, or you’re not sure exactly what your climber will like, then a gift card for your climber is ideal. Castle gift cards can be used on anything from our shop, put towards a course, any membership plan or even just single-entry visits, so they're the most versatile and unlikely to be wasted gift you could ask for. Plus, they're valid for a whole year from the date of purchase - and you can even buy them online.
