We are looking for a creative, innovative and skilled Chef to join our Kitchen Team at the Castle!
Hours: 20-25 hours per week.
Salary banding: £11.90 – £13.00 depending on skills and experience.
About The Castle
The Castle offers a diverse and wide range of Climbing facilities to cater for all. Based in Stoke Newington, the Centre itself is a Grade II listed Victorian Water pumping station, with a Café, shop, outdoor boulders and community gardens. A friendly and enthusiastic team we are passionate in providing the highest quality facilities in a fun, motivated, and inclusive environment. Sustainability is an important part of the Centre’s vision and values and is integrated into every aspect of the business, especially within our Café, where we try to source a lot of our produce from the community gardens onsite.
Reporting to the Operations Manager you will be working in collaboration with the other Chef’s in the Kitchen Team to provide excellent Vegan food and refreshments to our climbers and visitors at the centre. As a Chef you will be responsible for ensuring Food Safety and Hygiene standards are of a high quality and ensuring health and safety standards are met.
At the Castle we are committed to improving our sustainability ethics and values. The Café is a big part of this commitment, utilising the seasonal fruit and veg from our Garden and using ethical suppliers wherever possible. As a Castle Chef you will be passionate about this commitment and look for creative and innovative ways to use and showcase garden produce, you will also be actively involved in helping to improve our sustainability practices within the Kitchen and Café. For this reason, our Chef’s collaborate closely together and with the Garden Team.
This is an exciting role that provides exposure in a different and creative type of food service.
The successful individual will be creative and proactive in their way of working, comfortable with variation and a busy kitchen environment. The successful Chef will also have experience of and a passion for sustainable food practices and service. Ideally you should have a Level 3 in Food Hygiene and have experience of working within vegetarian or vegan café/kitchen.
Experience costing food products and developing recipes is desirable for this role. Experience of working in a team in a collaborative and creative environment, willing to take on board others ideas and suggestions and also driving your own is a must.
A great communicator the individual will also be happy to take on board feedback from our staff and customers and feel comfortable addressing possible complaints in a diplomatic and constructive way.
Candidates must have experience of:
Working in a Vegetarian or Vegan Café/Kitchen.
Ordering and managing stock
Menu/food product development
Enthusiasm and knowledge of sustainable food practices
Experience collaborating with other chefs
Costing food products
As part of this role, you will be required to work weekends and possibly evenings on a rota basis.
