The Castle is absolutely delighed to be announced joint winners in the 6th annual Urban Food Awards!
"The Urban Food Awards, first launched by the Mayor of London and London Food Link in 2013, are a celebration of everything good about London’s food scene. From restaurants going that extra mile to reduce Climate Change and protect the environment, to social enterprises looking providing good food jobs through to community organisers giving people access to nature and good food. Food is at the centre of our lives and the world, so we want to applaud those working towards a better food world."
We are so proud to be named joint winners of the Climate Champion award for our efforts in our 1.4 hectare organic permaculture garden and Café. Nearly everything served up in our Café has at least one garden grown ingredient in - from the fruits in our cakes to the handpicked salads, and the rich variety of organic veggies that make our savoury dishes so tasty.
And if you're wondering where our excess produce went whilst the Castle Café was so closed, then do not fear - food waste is not how we do things here at the Castle. All excess found a happy home with the Castle Food Service, set up during lockdown to help feed our neighbours in need. This initiative was so succesful it has out grown us (pun intended) and become the National Food Service London. We're still supplying them with fresh organic surplus vegetables now.
