Nature, climbing and healthy cooking - Active Families Day

Families from Tower Hamlets attended a fun day, in spite of a morning of gales and downpours, focussed on health and well-being.

The day combined climbing sessions, with a nature discovery walk along the local New River path to the London Wildlife Trust’s recently opened Woodberry Wetlands, yoga, and garden activities - exploring the Castle Garden, seed sowing, harvesting leaves and herbs, making pizzas with healthy garden grown toppings, firing them in the cob oven and eating together at the end!

Sessions were led by Castle Chef Shonet, Garden Events Coordinator and family activities leader Lauren, Gardener and Sustainable Beekeeper Sean, and climbing instructors Julie and Kerry.

Some parents came along with trepidation, not knowing what to expect, having never climbed before. We were very pleased that 100% of participants enjoyed their experience of climbing. Many expressed a lot of enthusiasm about the garden, the environmental ethos of the centre, and for making their own pizzas.

By the end of the day seeds had been planted- metaphorically and physically, in the form of enthusiasm for a new fun physical activity and new skills and knowledge to build upon, and in the trays they took away with them to grow their own salads at home.

Here’s what parents said about the day:

“Wonderful day with the kids without technology.”

“…a brilliant place with a great ethos.”

“Loved it! Loved how nice and informative the staff are. Loved how eco-friendly the facility is.”

A big thank you to Tallulah (THYSF), Megan (Health Programmes Officer, THYSF) and Tower Hamlets Council for making it possible.

If you would like to chat or find out more about what we can offer your group- combining climbing with garden activities... nature connection, food growing and cooking/healthy eating- please contact Lauren:

The day was part of the THYSF Active Families project*. Funded by THYSF and London Borough of Tower Hamlets Main Stream Grants funding programme.

* Tower Hamlets Youth & Sports Foundation (THYSF) is working with Parent Liaison networks in a number of primary schools in Tower Hamlets to help to reduce levels of obesity in children. The project aims to engage parents and their children in physical activity and training workshops to address inactivity in families and bring about lifestyle changes.
