Jim Pope wins Hackney's U16 Sports Personality of the Year

Image:

Castle Comp Squad captain, Jim Pope, has won Hackney's U16 Sports Person of the Year. The award recognises an individual who has had outstanding success/achievements within their chosen sport. In addition to objective success, nominees must also have made a significant impact on sport in Hackney, be a role model, have exceeded expectations in their performance and made a significant difference to a team. Over the last two years, Jim has undoubtedly met all these criteria and we congratulate him on receiving this well-deserved award!

Jim Pope by the numbers:
* Best on-sight: Empire of the Sun (7b) (7c+ indoors)
* Best redpoint: Hot Fun Closing (8a), Raindogs (8a), Cider Soak (8a)
* Hardest trad climb: Nosferatu (E6) and Life Assurance (E6)
* Hardest boulder problem: Weedkiller (7b)
* Best international result: 9th place at two European Youth Cups 2013 (Imst and Stavanger)
* Placed 24th at the World Youth Championships in 2013 (Vancouver Island, Canada)
* Member of the British Team since 2012
* Member of the Castle Comp Squad since 2009

Were you surprised to have won? Yes, because it's normally other sports like football, swimming or cycling who win.

What do you think stood out in your nomination? I was the only one competing regularly at international level.

Did you meet anyone interesting at the awards? Yes, Noah Williams who trains with Tom Daley was just back from the European Championships which he had won. If his results had come back earlier maybe he would have won!

Is this the first year you've been nominated? No, I've been nominated two or three times. Last year a footballer won.

What do you think this says about climbing? It's getting more seen and noticed.

How often do you climb each week? 4 or 5 times.

What's your favourite training session? Whenever I'm lead climbing.

Do you think the standard of competition has improved over the last few years? Yes, especially in my category [Youth B] where there are three of us on the British Team. It's hard to keep up with everyone.

Jim is currently sponsored by Blurr, La Sportiva, Petzl, Beal, Liquid Grip and The Castle Climbing Centre. He is also the recipient of the Gold Sports Award from Hackney Council.
