New prices from January 2016

Dear Climbers,

What a year it’s been! The Castle continues to grow and develop in terms of the climbing we offer, our services and our team.  We celebrated twenty years in grand style with a UV climbing competition.  Throughout our journey, we’ve been driven by our mission to be Europe’s leading climbing centre.  This year, in anticipation of our busiest year, we focused our investment on the facilities that were under the most strain: the men’s changing room, lockers and Reception.

We’ve also increased our staffing levels to respond to the increase in demand and we now have a team of 70(!) staff to run The Castle.  We’ve had builders on site for nearly three years now pushing forward our development programme so that we can fully exploit and preserve our magnificent building.  It is a big operation and it’s only going to get bigger and better.
We know that the biggest complaint we receive is how busy we get so we’re working on addressing that.

  • We are acquiring the lease on the building next door (formerly The Pirates’ Playhouse) with a view to having that open for use as a climbing centre by mid 2016.  The new centre will be open, at no extra charge, to all our customers and will enable us to offer earlier weekday climbing.
  • We will very shortly be opening Wells 3 and 4 – the paint is drying as I write this! Well 3 will have 6 autobelays, giving customers the option to train on longer routes at any time of the day.
  • We’re going to convert more of the Reception level climbing into top-roping and offer 4 autobelays there as well.
  • We are planning the development of a Mezzanine level in the Café to increase the seating capacity.

In order to keep delivering the level of service you expect from us, we review our prices annually.  This year, there will be a slight increase across the board on most payment plans and single visits, though we are holding the price on concession visits and bringing the cost of novice visits down from £13/£8 (std/conc.) to £12.50/£7.50.  You’ll find our full 2016 price list below.  I’m pleased to introduce a new payment plan of unlimited climbing for just £33 per month for qualifying concessions.  Payment plan holders (prepaid, punchcard & direct debit) will also be able to benefit from private weekly lock-ins (Sunday evenings from 7.30pm) from January 2016.   And finally, don’t forget that members can also bring in up to two children climbing for free!

Speaking on behalf of my team, we are very proud of what we are able to offer - from the great quality routes and boulder problems, professional coaching and instruction, excellent café and shop to the inspiring sustainable garden project.   We would not be able to do this without you and I thank you for your loyalty, enthusiasm and continued support for The Castle.
