Rock climbing has many benefits for young people including the development of teamwork, self-confidence, trust, motivation and increased levels of fitness. It also enables young people to cope with fear and stress in a positive manner and encourages both self-reliance and responsibility for others.
A climbing club for 15 to 17 years old climbers. Sessions run Monday evenings from 7pm to 8.30pm.
The National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS)
NICAS is designed to introduce new and young climbers to climbing on artificial climbing walls in a series of five levels of increasing technical skill and knowledge. The scheme is administered by the Association of British Climbing Walls Training Trust (ABCTT) and is endorsed by the British Mountaineering Council. The scheme provides structure and motivates new climbers to develop their skills so that they get the most out of their climbing as well and have their achievements recognised.
Aims of scheme:
to learn climbing rope-work and how to use equipment safely
to develop climbing movement skills and improve levels of ability
to develop risk assessment and management skills in the sport
to develop teamwork and trust with climbing partners
