You may have seen our new iPads around Reception. What's that about? Well, we're upgrading our entry system. If you have a payment plan (quarterly, six monthly, annual or Direct Debit) that expires after the 1st of July 2014 you will be able to pre-register and pick up your new membership card which will allow you to check yourself in from the 16th of June. Yes, that's right... no more waiting in queues while someone is completing their forms. You'll be able to go straight to self-check in.

I hope that you’ve been enjoying the new facilities that we’ve developed this year: the New Lead Area, Comp Wall, Outside Boulders and, of course, the long-awaited Loft Wall and Loft Boulder. I know that I’ve been enjoying it! We’ve also built a Roundhouse in the Garden and developed our new website. I’ve had so many people come and tell me how great they think the new areas are and how proud to be part of the Castle because of its atmosphere and its values. That encouragement means a lot to me- thank you.

Another great short video by Ben Grubb, capturing the excitement of the day. And just like The Loft opening, this was worth the wait!
In 2009, when we embarked on our mission to reduce our environmental impact, the first thing we did was take stock and try to measure what our impact actually was. We used 2008 as our 'base year' from which we will measure our progress. Putting together the data for the report was a mammoth task involving digging up old invoices, researching methodologies, choosing conversion factors and trying to remember what the heck we'd done the previous year. That first report highlighted the key areas of impact and we developed our Sustainability Policy and Goals.

The Castle has always been committed to development and research especially when it comes to climbing and facilities. In the name of research in the past years we have travelled to France to participate and network in international events, toured all over the UK visiting the latest walls, and climbed around the country to get a feel for grading and styles. These trips have always been productive: we learnt a lot from others and took steps to implement changes as a result.

The Garden Boulders were officially opened at the Castle's Garden party on Sunday, 21st of July. The Dyno Comp, taking place on the West Side of The Battleship Boulder drew large crowds both in The Castle and from people passing by on Green Lanes. Many of the climbers rediscovered the old Featured Wall, in its new reincarnation as The Featured Boulder. Two of the boulders (Trackside and Battleships) have 6 circuits on them. The Boulders will be open when the centre is open (12pm weekdays, 10am weekends) and close 15 minutes before closing time or dusk (whichever is earliest).
