The Garden Boulders were officially opened at the Castle's Garden party on Sunday, 21st of July. The Dyno Comp, taking place on the West Side of The Battleship Boulder drew large crowds both in The Castle and from people passing by on Green Lanes. Many of the climbers rediscovered the old Featured Wall, in its new reincarnation as The Featured Boulder. Two of the boulders (Trackside and Battleships) have 6 circuits on them. The Boulders will be open when the centre is open (12pm weekdays, 10am weekends) and close 15 minutes before closing time or dusk (whichever is earliest).
Castle sponsored climber Jon Partridge continued his World Cup competition season with events in Toronto and Vail. His blog gives an insight into the life of a competition climber. His next appearance on the international circuit will be in Munich on the 24th and 25th of August. He'll also be competing at the British Bouldering Championships in Sheffield on the 6th and 7th of July.
The 2012/3 competition season wound up with great success. Half of the squad qualified for the national finals of the BMC Youth Climbing Series, held the 15th of June at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena. Out of over 300 of the nation's best young climbers, alll of our squad members performed exceptionally well. Grace Spence-Green (pictured above with top British climber Steve McClure), our co-captain, won her category (Girls Youth A). This achievement is all the more remarkable because it's only Grace's second year competing.
Ben Grubb has been putting together some great videos of the Blocfest series. The final instalment - round 5 at the Biscuit Factory- has been released. Check it out and see how many Castle Comp Squad members and regulars you can spot. The Squad was amazing, taking 5 of 6 podium places!
The Castle hosted the third (and final) round of the BMC Youth Climbing Series on Saturday (20 April). On a lovely day, we had 129 competitors inside cranking it out on three routes and three boulder problems. The Castle Squad put on a great show as usal with a record 5 competitors selected for the National Final in June at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena. Big congratulations to Jo and Sam who placed first in their categories on Saturday.
The Castle Climbing Centre supports the BMC and the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) in their bid to help make climbing an Olympic Sport. Along with other Association of British Climbing Wall members we have put a petition at Reception and in the Cafe that you can sign to show your support for competition climbing becoming an Olympic sport in 2020.
