Tier 3 Announcement: Are Climbing Gyms in London Open?

Now that London will be moving into Tier 3 tomorrow, here is an update on climbing at the Castle in tier 3.
The Big One: Will the Castle be open?
YES! Sports and leisure facilities remain open in tier 3. As we fall under the same classification as an indoor gym (the closest approximation, anyway), we will be open under tier 3 restrictions.
What’s changing in the centre?
Our extensive safety measures that have been in place in tier 2 already meet the requirements for tier 3. You will be required to wash your hands regularly, wear a mask whenever you’re not on the wall, and you will need to pre-book your session all the same as you did under tier 2. Our general climbing entries do not change.
Who can we climb with?
The Tier 3 restrictions mean you can only exercise with someone in your household or bubble, which means for lead and top rope climbing, your partner should be from your bubble. If you are using the centre independently, or your normal climbing partner(s) are outside of your bubble, please stick to bouldering, Autobelay or even check out the newly opened Forge if you’re feeling strong!
Has your capacity changed?
No. Our capacity was carefully calculated earlier this year and is already fewer climbers than the proposed maximum based on square footage guidance. We feel because the Castle is an unusual shape, we would rather offer slightly fewer climbers a safer experience.
Will my climbing course go ahead?
Indoor group exercise courses can run, but all attendees must be from the same group or bubble. Therefore we’re amending our Christmas climbing courses – our popular family tasters will be run with only one family at a time, meaning you get a more personal experience and a smaller group, and our adult courses will also be within one bubble. This means for some courses they will be shorter, as you’ll have more 1 on 1 time with your instructor for a truly tailored and comprehensive learning environment. As before, you will be required to wear a mask, sanitise, and follow your instructor’s guidance for social distancing measures.
What about the Shop and the Café?
The Café will be operating exclusively on a takeaway basis, as per the tier 3 rules. The seating area will be roped off for all customers, even those in a household bubble. We will be offering a reduced takeaway menu of hot drinks, delicious homemade cakes, crisps and snacks for takeaway only. To combat the environmental impact of single use takeaway containers, we are using compostable eco-friendly cups, containers and cutlery. Please bring your own water bottles and refill them at the fountains throughout the centre.
The Shop will also be able to remain open with the same strict COVID-19 measures in place for any equipment hire and Christmas shopping.
Can I use the Garden?
The garden is under the same restrictions as indoor spaces, that people should stay within their bubble or household.
What are your Christmas opening times?
