Pump Rooms

Four original pumping wells lie under the café and lead walls under the full length of the floor.  Having lain dormant since the pumping station fell into disuse, this area is now being excavated and developed into four new lead climbing areas.

The Vaults

The Castle is full of secret chambers and tunnels that snake their way through the depths of the Castle, beneath the feet of unsuspecting climbers. The Vaults, named for the beautiful vaulted ceilings and arched doorways will house a 40m traverse wall, circuits room and a training/treatment room. The bottom of the abseil tower will also be opened up as a new top roping area to give a unique climbing experience up the inside of the tower.

Ground Floor

Boiler House — Main Entrance

The ground floor is the pumping station's original boiler house and still houses five diesel tanks behind and underneath various walls. There’s something for everyone here with a mix of top ropes, lead lines and bouldering, ranging from the gentle and easy to the rock-hard.

The Castle Shop located across from Reception has the biggest range of climbing shoes in the South East and a great selection of clothes from top climbing brands like prAna, Blurr, Patagonia and Moon.  They also show the latest climbing DVDs so it’s a nice place to hang out in between problems.

Going through the back door you’ll find yourself in a different place – our organic garden is a lovely place to relax after an afternoon's climbing session.  Based on permaculture principles, our objectives are to grow food for our café, create a wildlife habitat and act as an educational resource for the community. You can get involved and learn about permaculture and growing your own food through our weekly volunteer days and monthly gardening events.

Follow the path around the garden or take the stairs down from Floor 2 (Engine House) and find yourself in the Boulder Field. The Castle's beloved feature wall is resurrected, nestled between two impressive, towering sandstone style boulders. On a crisp, cold, sunny winters day, if you squint slightly, you could almost believe you're out on the grit, enjoying the great friction. Sunny summer days no longer need to be spent climbing indoors - with 6 coloured circuits changed regularly and the featured wall to master, you can while away many enjoyable summer evenings out in the garden.

Floor 1

Mezzanine

The mezzanine floor was built in 2005 and has five very different bouldering areas requiring all types of climbing techniques to master the problems.
The traverse wall and our two free standing boulders, Lust & Envy provide plenty of traversing problems.   The Catacomb demands strong arms and stamina to monkey across its 10 meter roof.

The lower level part of the mezzanine is home to the delicate and balancey Slab, which includes a top out boulder area, and the Mezz. With its overhanging prow and steep walls (up to 45 degrees), The Mezz has played host to many a nail-biting bouldering comp final.

Also on this level are the men’s changing rooms, two training rooms which can be hired for meetings and events, and a stretching area.

Floor 2

Engine House

Now home to the cafe and the tall walls, this floor didn’t actually exist until we developed the climbing centre. The building takes its name from the six engines housed here. These were so big that the engine house had to be constructed around them.

This area has recently been re-developed to give us extra lead lines and a world class competition bouldering wall.  But it’s not all hard core- we also have some lovely top rope slabs and vertical walls. A new staircase is currently being constructed that stretches from the bowels of the Castle right up to the new bouldering level on Floor 3.

The cafe provides Barista style coffee, home-made cakes, snacks, sandwiches and hot meals.  All of our food is organic or sustainably sourced and a fair amount of fresh produce comes straight from our very own permaculture garden and is prepared in our kitchen on-site.

Floor 3

The Loft

Floor 3 was the gantry floor of the pumping station and until recently it had openings in the floor where the flywheels of the engines used to protrude. The gantry level enabled the workers to maintain the flywheels from above. The Loft space has been developed in 2013 and now consists of a 16m long bouldering wall and 4m high free standing boulder in this light and airy space in the roof of the Castle.
